Bar-K Ranch is located on the edge of the Texas Hill Country, and is home to Gulf Coast Native Sheep, Mini Nubian Goats, honeybees, and chickens.
Gulf Coast Native Sheep are a landrace breed considered “critical” by the Livestock Conservancy. Over hundreds of years, these sheep have developed a natural resistance to intestinal parasites, foot rot, and other diseases.
We believe that by raising a low-input sheep breed, we are able to keep our other animals, and our land, healthier.
Our sheep and goats primarily feed on native pasture and trees. Their diet is supplemented with hay and non-GMO grain. Our chickens also have unlimited pasture access during the day. We have not vaccinated any of our livestock at this time [1/21/22], however we are not opposed to vaccinations if they are in the animal's best interest. We do not disbud our sheep, nor dock their tails; we do have some polled animals.
Herbal (1)-Conventional (10) 1-10 Scale: 5
Parasite Protocol: All animals receive herbal parasite supplements. Conventional deworming has not been used for the sheep, and only used for the goats when necessary, based on FAMACHA scoring and testing to determine specific parasites. Our animals also have unlimited access to juniper browse, which has some anti-parasitic properties.
Vaccination Protocols: Partial Vaccinations
