In 2018 I lost my mind. Sold my house in the city and fell in love with a 100 year house on about 4 acres.
We had chickens from when we lived in the city and brought them with. Neighbors complained about the new roosters crowing each day on the local neighborhood Facebook page. Someone commented they should be happy we didn’t start a pig farm. Two years later and that is exactly what we are doing!!!!
Our adventure into Kunekune pigs started with Waffles a black/white boar, then we added Maple Bacon, and a few littles.
I’ve always had a thing for Flying Pigs, and everyone knows the original “Pig”, Ruby, so after lots of overthinking of names a friend came up with “Flying Pig Fields”.
Our goal is to help educate others on the process of where their food comes from by raising stock holistically that requires minimal intervention.
Kune kune pigs are smaller pastured pigs which thrive on small homesteads.
A small number of animals are housed on the property to prevent overgrazing or increased risk for parasites or disease. Piglets are administered iron injections at 4 days old as they are born iron deficient.. We do not administer any vaccines as these animals may be consumed by humans. Should a buyer choose to vaccinate once the animals leave the farm that is their choice. Natural herbs, many of which are grown on the property are used in bedding to help deter pests.
Herbal (1)-Conventional (10) 1-10 Scale: 4
Parasite Protocol: Parasites are managed by utilizing natural deterrents year round. Ivermectin is used only in severe cases and on an as needed basis. This is usually once a year during the wet weather as we find an increase in mites during this time.
Vaccination Protocols: No Vaccinations
