We are a small family farm about 50 miles South of Chicago. We raise Purebred Nubians. We keep a small herd of, and our focus is improving genetics and breeding for extended lactation and overall hardy goats with good and quiet temperament . We are in the works of getting our breed registered with the ADGA, but that doesn’t change the quality of genetics we’ve put into our little herd. We strive for good udder attachment and teat placement, correctness in feet, overall quality confirmation, and staying true to the Nubian features that make the breed distinct. We do practice disbudding.
We practice holistic integrative management. Our goats are not vaccinated and the use of herbs, homeopathy and essential oils are our first tools to turn to when/if needed. We do understand the need for conventional Western medicine at times, and utilize it if necessary. Our kids are dam raised and our does in milk are hand milked daily.
Our herd is fed mainly a diet of locally grown alfalfa hay, and does in milk or pregnant get grain on the milk stand. We do not feed organic hay or grain. They are on browse during the favorable months.
We use herbal, homeopathic and essential oil modalities as our first response to either illness or as our first line of defense against illness. We don’t completely rule out conventional Western medicine, but it is saved for times when it’s absolutely needed.
